Ocean Direct was formed by OLD FAMILY FRIENDS Grant Robinson and Stephen Piper over 10 years ago. Its purpose was and still is to get the hard working Fisherman a better landing cost for their fish, reduce the middle mans Margin and present a fairer price to the restaurant.
Fishing now for 32 years Grant has seen many changes in the industry and works under a strict sustainably model with all fish caught within his Annual Catch entitlement. Grant’s vessel Star of the Sea has been equipped with the latest electronic positioning & reporting systems, required by MPI. This will ensure efficient and accurate monitoring of the vessel and its targeted catch.
But aside from all the glamour of the catch, the fisherman work hard often with very early starts, and long days. On the other hand, there are some spectacular sights, often they come across Albatross, whales and pods of dolphins.
Currently, the Star of the Sea working from Wellington’s Island Bay is set up for Dropline fishing consisting of a series of baited hooks which can be set down to depths of up to 400m for the targeted species of Hapuka & Lemon fish. The vessel also at times engages in the Butterfish Fishery on the South Coast of Wellington and Southern Wairarapa Coast. Helping to bring locally caught fresh seafood to the Wellington Restaurants and direct to you.
